How to Play Video Poker

A lot of online casino enthusiasts view video poker games as being the same as slot machines. They are both video based games that offer random results. However, there is one big difference – you actually get to make decisions in a video poker game, which increases the strategic payoff incredibly to the players favor.

Video poker games are very easy to learn and play. It is simply a matter of understanding how to play poker, and what the buttons do. Video poker is unlike a normal poker game because you are not competing against any other poker hands. Your sole mission is to achieve a strong enough hand rank to receive a payout.

How to Play Video Poker – Objective

The object of video poker games is to develop a hand that ranks high enough to instigate a payout. In Jacks or Better Video Poker, for example, you’ll need a pair of jacks, or better, to win. Anything less (pair of 10’s for instance) is worthless.

How to Play Video Poker – Understanding Draw Poker

Most video poker games are based on Jacks or Better. Some have wild cards and/or jokers, which can affect the lowest ranking hand that instigates a payout, but either way, the rules of the game are the same.

You get 5 cards to start with. You choose which of those cards you want to keep, and which you want to discard. There is a draw phase in which all discarded cards are taken away and replaced with new cards. This completes your final hand. If it ranks high enough to win, you are paid the corresponding payout for that hand. If not, you lose your bet.

How to Play Video Poker – All those Buttons!

Coin Size: The first buttons you’ll want to use are the Coin Denomination arrows. A default coin size will be shown, with an arrow point down (or left) and an arrow pointing up (or right). Click the down arrow to decrease the coin size; the up arrow to increase it.

Number of Coins: Most video poker games allow you to insert anywhere from 1 to 5 coins per play. It is generally recommended to bet the maximum coins as the payout for a Royal Flush is much better at 5 coins than at any other amount (see “How to Play Video Poker – Pay Table” below).

Betting: To bet the maximum number of coins, simply press “Bet Max”. This will instantly deal your initial 5 card hand. If you wish to bet below max, just click the “Bet One” button as many times as you wish to insert a coin, then press “Draw” to deal the hand.

Drawing: Look at your hand and decide which cards you want to keep. Click once on each card and a HOLD sign will appear over the card. If you change your mind, just click the card again to remove the HOLD sign. Any card that does not have a HOLD sign will be discarded. When ready, click “Draw” to get your new hand.

All discarded cards are replaced with new cards to reveal your final hand.

How to Play Video Poker – Pay Table

The pay table should be displayed directly above the cards, revealing all winning hand combinations and the payout for each according to how many coins you inserted. Any time you have a winning hand combination, that hand rank will be highlighted on the pay table.
